Greetings Band Parents!

I’m Nathan Porter, the president of the Coronado Band Boosters for 2008.  I have made up a tentative band parent e-mail mailing list to keep you informed about what the Band Boosters are doing and to ask for your support for this marching season.

What do the Boosters do?

The Boosters are here to support the band.  We try to organize band parents to help with fund raising projects and support the band by volunteering time at football games, band trips and other events.

The Boosters meet on the second Tuesday of each month for the purpose of planning fund raising projects, coordinating volunteers for band events and keeping all parents informed about upcoming events.  Parents can become official voting members of the Coronado Band Boosters by paying the annual membership dues of $5 per parent.

Each year in February, the Boosters set up a budget plan to spend the funds raised the previous year to support the band.  The major expenses supported by the band include the cost of the music and drill package, fees for additional part-time instructors and equipment truck rental.  The Boosters’ financial support is necessary to allow the band to participate in competition events, away football games and out of state trips.

The Boosters are organized as a non-profit corporation, maintain public records and operate within the corporation’s bylaws.  The Boosters are guided by an executive board (“e-board”) of six members plus the band director.  The annual budget and major expenditures must be approved by a majority vote of Booster members.

How can parents get involved with the Boosters or get more information?

The next Booster meeting is Tuesday, September 9th at 7 pm at the Coronado Band Room.  All parents are welcome, whether or not Booster members.  Parents who become Booster members at the meeting will have voting rights.   You may also purchase band T-shirts (same 2008 “Fiddler on the Roof” T-shirt worn by band members) for $11.

I’ve put a list of volunteer needs and a list of upcoming football games at the end of this message.  If you do not attend the Booster meeting on September 9th, please e-mail me if you would like to volunteer.

Parents who cannot attend Booster meetings can still support the band in many ways.  First, stay informed about band events and fund raising efforts by tuning into the band website at: www.donsband.org Everything parents need to know can be found there!

Second, contact me or other Booster e-board members if you have questions, suggestions or would like to volunteer to help at an event or with ongoing needs of the band.

Third, help the Boosters network with family and friends who may have special talents or connections to individuals and companies that might support the band in a fund raising event. Don’t forget tax credit donations!

Please provide feedback

If you would like to remain on this mailing list and receive further messages and updates from the Boosters, please respond to this e-mail.  If you want to be taken off this mailing list, please let me know and I will take care of it.  I may have more than one e-mail address per band student.  Let me know if you have one preferred e-mail address between two parents.  Or, if you’d like to get a phone call instead of an e-mail, that will help me also.

Let’s have a great school year and a superior marching season!

Nathan Porter

Football game volunteer needs:

Concessions (five to six needed): Three to four parents to operate the popcorn, cotton candy and shaved ice machines; one or two additional to assist with setup before the game and/or clean up after the game.

Hydration team (five needed): Two parents to fill large water coolers and set them up in the stands and three or more to hand out water to keep band members hydrated at the game.

“Fanny runners” (two needed): We already have volunteers in place for this task, but backups may be handy if needed.  Volunteers cover the band’s part of the bleachers with clean white cloths to keep white uniform pants clean, then take home the cloths and wash and store them for the next game.

Uniform managers (two needed): We also presently have volunteers in place for this.  These essential volunteers distribute and store band uniforms at the band room before and after the games.
